The Basics of Hot Tubs and Spas

Hot Tubs
n the 1970s, "hot tubs" became a popular recreational addition for many homes. These simple, barrel-shaped tubs, usually made of redwood, have bench seating. Early hot tubs were sometimes equipped with hydrojets to produce bubbling massage action. Others lacked this feature and, instead, provided a simple soak in tranquil water.

Unfortunately, the very thing that gave early hot tubs their beauty and appeal also caused many problems: their natural wood. If not cared for diligently, such tubs can develop leaks and also can harbor bacteria.

Spas
Spas are as versatile as they are enjoyable. The basic types of spas that exist in today's marketplace range from hot tubs to various styles of in-ground spas to completely portable, selfcontained models. Like most things, spas come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. The spa that you choose should reflect your needs and taste. Most importantly, you'll want to consider how many people your spa needs to accommodate on a regular basis. While a large round or octagonal design may give you room enough for the whole family plus some (the largest seat around 8 average-size adults), a smaller two-seater" model may give you the most comfort. This is because smaller models are often built with curves to meet and support the lines of your body, including the important lumbar area.

Whether you select a large "Party Spa" or a smaller "Personal Spa" is up to you. Before committing to a particular style, it's important to "test drive" a few different spas; don't be afraid to actually sit in some showroom models to get a feel for things. There should be filled as well as unfilled models in the dealer's display, so you probably won't need to bring your bathing suit.)
